Driving Rules in New Zealand

Important Reminders:

• Drive on the left hand side of the road.
• Minimum age to drive and rent a car is 21 years old. 
• Seat belts are a must for ALL passengers.
• Hands-free is a must. Keep your phone away unless it is hands-free. You will be fined for using your phone!
• Drink moderately if driving. The permitted alcohol level limit is 80 mg per 100 ml of blood.   
• Speed limit is 50 km/h in urban areas and 100 km/h outside urban areas and on highways.
• You can turn left even on red lights. Cars behind you will honk if you did not.
• Drivers and passengers must wear seat belts or child restraints at all times, in both front and rear seats.
• It is illegal to pass other cars where there is yellow line instead of a white line marking the middle of the road. The yellow line indicates that it’s too dangerous to overtake.
• The default open road speed limit is 100kph and the default urban limit is 50kph.
• The speed limit past a school bus that has stopped to drop off or pick up children is 20kph.
• While road speed limit signs are denoted by a red circle, advisory speed limit signs are black numbers on a yellow background. These indicate the advised maximum speed in dry weather for a corner.
