Important Reminders For Driving in Japan:
- Traffic moves on the left side of the road.
- The minimum driving age is 18 years old and the minimum age to rent a car is 21 years old.
- While driving, a driver and all passengers in the car must wear seat belts.
- Hands-free is a must. Keep your phone away unless it is hands-free.
- Drinking and driving is not tolerated. Japan has very strict rules for drunk driving.
- The speed limit is 30 km/h on urban areas, 80 km/h on rural roads and 100 km/h on motorways.
- A warning triangle, fire extinguisher, first aid kit, and spare bulbs for car external lights must be present in every vehicle.
- Be sure to have an early warning device in your car.

Drivers and cyclists must keep to the left, while pedestrians should keep to the right side of the road. Drivers must yield to pedestrians. You must not drive under the influence of alcohol. You must not exceed the allowed number of passengers or load. While driving a vehicle, you must not use a cell phone or be distracted by the car navigation system. When you drive a vehicle, you must wear a seatbelt. All passengers in the vehicle must also wear seatbelts. When you drive with an infant younger than six years old, you must place the infant securely in a child seat.

Driving in Japan in winter is challenging. Be sure to prepare before heading out. Put on winter tires in all wheels. Keep emergency kits in your car at all time.
