Driving Rules in Bhutan

Bhutan is not a part of 1949 and 1968 Conventions of road traffic, but an International driving permit is honored by the country. However, for driving in Bhutan it is permitted to drive with the International driving license for up three months. Bhutan is known for beautiful monasteries, fortresses and incredible landscapes. Important Reminders for Driving in Bhutan:

• Drive on the right side of the road.
• The minimum driving age is 18 years old. The minimum rental age is 21 years old. 
• Seat belts are a must.
• Keep your phones away at all times while driving. Hands-free is a must.
• Avoid drinking! The legal alcohol limit is 8 mg per 100 ml of blood.   
• The speed limit is 30 km/h in urban areas, 50 km in general.
• Avoid driving at night. Roads are tight and there are no street lights.
• You cannot drive in neutral gear.

Additional Information For Driving in Bhutan:

Bhutan has few roads, which are situated along the steep mountainsides. Only one road is connecting Bhutan to the outside world; it is from Thimphu to India. Bhutan does not have any automated traffic signals. Most road signs are hand-written in English. However, some road signs are in English and Dzongkha languages. Typically, police officers direct traffic at roundabouts. Most intersections in Bhutan are typically T-junctions. Bhutan does not have any major highways. In mountains, roads are typically single-track with places for opposing traffic to pass. As to parking, many roads in Bhutan are too narrow for vehicles to park. Thimphu and Paro are permit-free zones; for driving to other places, foreign drivers must obtain route permits from the immigration office in Thimphu. Cars can enter Bhutan from India. During heavy rains, there is a risk of falling rocks and landslides which can block roads.

Driving in Bhutan during Winter:

Bhutan is a tropical land so there is no winter here. However, you need to be extra cautious driving during rainy season. Roads may be flooded and slippery. Do not travel from June to October. Any other time of the year, you are good!
