If you plan on traveling outside of the United States, you will need an international driver’s license (IDL) before entering Mexico. You must apply online through the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Print out application form and mail it in.

To obtain an IDL, you’ll need to print out the application form and mail it to the DMV. You’ll also need to provide proof of U.S. citizenship or permanent residency. This includes a passport, birth certificate, naturalization papers, green card, or other official documents proving your status as a citizen or resident.

Wait up to 3 weeks for approval.

Once you’ve mailed off your application, you should receive a response within three weeks. If you haven’t heard anything after three weeks, contact the DMV directly at 1-800-521-5511.

Pay $29 fee.

You’ll need to pay an additional $29 fee to process your application. This includes a passport photo, fingerprinting, and a background check.

If you plan on traveling outside of the United States, you will need to apply for an international driver’s license (IDL). To do so, you must first obtain a Mexican national identity card (DNI) and then submit it along with your passport and other documents to the nearest U.S. consulate. Once you’ve obtained your DNI, you can apply for an IDL at any DMV office.
