Driving Rules in Albania

• The minimum driving age is 18 years old and the minimum rental age is 21 years old. 
• While driving, a driver and all passengers in the car must wear seat belts.
• Hands-free is a must.
• Avoid drinking if you are driving. The legal alcohol limit is 10 mg per 100 ml of blood.   
• The speed limit is 50 km/h in urban areas and 110 km/h on highways.
• Road tax will be charged upon entering Albania. Keep the receipt!.
• Be sure to keep a fire extinguisher, early warning device, reflective vest, spare bulbs and first aid kit in your car.

Driving in Albania is not easy as roads are generally in poor condition. Driving at night outside the main urban areas is dangerous and should be avoided. In winter, during may also be dangerous since snow and ice conditions on the roads in Northern Albania. There are no toll roads in Albania. To rent a car, a driver must present a full valid driver license which he has held for at least 3 years. The minimum age for renting a car is 21 years. If a driver are involved in an accident, he must wait until the police arrive. When enter Albania, a driver of foreign vehicle need to pay road tax. The customs officer issues a road tax certificate, which the driver must keep until he leaves the country and return at customs when exit the Albania.

Driving during winter in Albania can be rough. The snow can make visibility difficult. Be sure to keep your lights on at all times. Put on winter tires in all wheels. Have your emergency kits ready.
