Driving Rules in Algeria
An International driving permit is required from foreign visitors as well as their original driver license for driving in Algeria. - The minimum driving age is 17 years old. The minimum rental age is 21 years old.
- While driving, a driver and all passengers in the car must wear seat belts.
- Child-restraint is a must.
- Hands-free is a must.
- Avoid drinking if you are driving. The legal alcohol limit is 10 mg per 100 ml of blood.
- The speed limit is 50 km/h in urban areas, 80 km in rural roads and 110 km/h on most expressways.
- Third-party insurance is mandatory.
- Avoid driving in the desert alone!
- The police phone number is 17.
- To rent a car, drivers must be at least 24 years of age and have to have driver licenses for two or more years.
Additional Information for Driving in Algeria:
In Algeria, there are many military checkpoints on major roads within the major cities. It is recommended to have a first-aid kit, reflective waistcoat, and warning triangle in the car. In Algeria, there are many desert roads so well-maintained 4-wheel drive vehicles are recommended for driving. It is not permitted to drive alone in the desert and required people travel with groups. When driving in desert, drivers should carry full supplies of water and petrol. Travel overland, particularly in the southern regions, may require a permit issued by the Algerian government. Fully comprehensive insurance is recommended for driving in Algeria as road accidents are common there. The Green Card insurance is not valid in Algeria. The third party insurance can be bought at the border.
Driving in Algeria during winter:
Algeria has a hot climate. Winter and snow is not a concern. The desert is a challenge you must avoid. Be prepared at all times. Keep bottled drinking water in your car.
