Why carry an IDP while driving in Canada?
Your IDP is a valid form of identification in more than 150 countries worldwide and contains your name, photo and driver information in the 12 most widely spoken languages in the world – it is understandable to most of the local officials and authorities of the countries you visit.
It translates your identification information into 12 languages — so it speaks the language even if you don’t. Canada highly recommends an International Driving Permit.
Driving Rules in Canada
The IDP is valid for 1 year in most countries and you can renew it. The IDP is a translation of your driver’s licence from another country into many languages. You must have a valid driver’s licence from another country to use an IDP in Canada.
Important Reminders:
- Canada is a right-hand drive country.
- Pass others on the left hand side of the road.
- Always give way to pedestrians on pedestrian crossings.
- All occupants in a vehicle must wear a seat belt.
- Mobile Phones are not permitted while driving, with the exception of a hands-free system. Always use indicator lights when turning.
- Radar detectors are prohibited.
- Drivers are to carry at all times while driving: a valid drivers licence, registration documents and insurance documents.
Speed limits in Canada
Speed limits vary between 30 km/h and 100 km/h, depending whether you are in town or on the highway. Speed limit signs are posted on all roads indicating the maximum speed permitted. The minimum speed on the highway is 60 km/h and the maximum is 100 km/h. There is a tacit understanding that speeds up to 120 km/h are tolerated on most Canadian highways.
Driving in Canada during Winter:
Driving a car through a Canadian winter can be incredibly challenging, even if you are an experienced driver. Make sure to check the weather conditions before traveling and prepare for the possibility of heavy snow, black ice, and white-out conditions. Have a fully charged cell phone and emergency contact numbers available for easy calling. Pack a small travel kit with items such as blankets, flashlights, ice scrapers and kitty litter if you ever need tire traction. Sometimes, the safest option may be avoiding driving until a winter storm passes.
Enjoy your stay and have a safe travel.
