Driving Rules in Colombia

Be sure to keep a few rules in mind to enjoy your vacation to the fullest. There is no winter in Colombia. Be sure to take extra precautions during the rainy season as roads can be slippery. Important Reminders:
- Colombians drive on the right side of the road.
- The minimum driving age is 18 years old. The minimum rental age is 23 years old.
- Seat belts are a must.
- Child-restraint is a must.
- Drink responsibly. The maximum blood alcohol level is 40 mg per 100 ml of blood.
- The speed limit is 60 km/h in urban areas, 80 km in rural roads and 100 km/h in highways.
- You are required to drive with dipped headlights on highways all day long.
- Watch out for speed bumps.
Additional information for driving in Colombia:
It is recommended to drive on highways with headlights on. Speed bumps are common. All distances are given in kilometers and speed limits in kilometers per hours. In case of an accident, drivers should call for the police and do not move the vehicles until the police arrive and write the report. Gasoline is sold by gallons. Colombian drivers are aggressive and often do not obey local traffic regulations.
