Driving Rules in Congo
The Republic of Congo, also known as Congo-Brazzaville, has some of the most beautiful forests and landscapes in the entire world. In case you must travel to Congo-Brazzaville, be sure to use your own car for added protection and comfort. Keep in mind these reminders to help you plan your trip.
Important Reminders:
- You’re not allowed to drive in the Republic of Congo. The car rental company will provide you with a driver.
- The speed limit is 60 km/h in urban areas, 90 km in rural roads and 120 km/h on expressways.
- Seat belts are a must.
- Check points will ask you to blow through a breathalyzer.
- Drink responsibly. The maximum blood alcohol level is 10 mg per 100 ml of blood.
- Avoid going out at night.
- Road fatality is very high! Think twice about going to this country unless you really have to.
Road Conditions in Congo:
Roads throughout the DRC are generally in poor condition, and often impassable in the rainy season. When driving in cities, keep windows up and doors locked. At roadblocks or checkpoints, documents should be shown through closed windows. In the event of an automobile accident, remain inside your vehicle and wait for police. If a hostile mob forms or you feel your life is in danger, leave the scene and proceed directly to the nearest police station or gendarmerie to report in the incident.
Driving in Congo during Winter:
There is no winter in Congo-Brazzaville. Rainy season is tolerable as well. Be sure to prepare yourself well if you are really deciding to go on a trip.
