Why carry an IDP while driving in French Polynesia?
Your IDP is a valid form of identification in more than 150 countries worldwide and contains your name, photo and driver information in the 12 most widely spoken languages in the world – it is understandable to most of the local officials and authorities of the countries you visit.
It translates your identification information into 12 languages — so it speaks the language even if you don’t. French Polynesia highly recommends an International Driving Permit.
Driving Rules in French Polynesia
A valid driver license from other countries is honored in French Polynesia, but if it is not in French or English, its owner should have an International driving permit too. The French Polynesian islands drive on the right. Information on driving licences for foreigners is somewhat contradictory unfortunately. Officially, from what I could understand from the French Language website of the local police department, a temporary local licence is required to drive here. The UK Foreign office advise that your own photo ID licence plus a 1968 convention International Driving Permit are required. However, anecdotal evidence from travel forums suggests that most people have rented a vehicle using only their own photo ID licence. I would advise to check with the car rental company you plan to use. Also, if your licence isn’t written in Roman alphabet, it makes sense to also bring an IDP.
