Driving Rules in French Polynesia

A valid driver license from other countries is honored in French Polynesia, but if it is not in French or English, its owner should have an International driving permit too. The French Polynesian islands drive on the right. Information on driving licences for foreigners is somewhat contradictory unfortunately. Officially, from what I could understand from the French Language website of the local police department, a temporary local licence is required to drive here. The UK Foreign office advise that your own photo ID licence plus a 1968 convention International Driving Permit are required. However, anecdotal evidence from travel forums suggests that most people have rented a vehicle using only their own photo ID licence. I would advise to check with the car rental company you plan to use. Also, if your licence isn’t written in Roman alphabet, it makes sense to also bring an IDP. Speed limits range from 40kmh in built up areas to 80kmh in rural areas.The permitted blood alcohol level is 0.05%. .

• Traffic moves on the right side of the road.
• The minimum driving age is 18 years old. 
• While driving, a driver and all passengers in the car must wear seat belts.
• Speed limits are 40kmph (24 mph) in the built up areas and 80kmph (48 mph) on the open road.
• While riding, motorcyclists must wear protective helmets.   
• Vehicles entering from the right side of the road have a priority. Pedestrians have right of way at marked crosswalks.
• The permitted blood alcohol level is 0.05%.
• The police phone number is 17.
• Drivers on the main roads have the right of way.

Driving in French Polynesia During Winter

The islands of French Polynesia is scattered around in the South Pacific. There is no winter in the country. However, avoid travelling during the rainy season from November to April.
