Driving Rules in Namibia

To drive in Namibia, foreign visitors need a valid driver license issued by the country of their residence and an International driving license. It is permitted to drive with the International driving license for up three months. Namibia is one of the safest countries in Africa. Visit this country and you will never regret it. Roam around with your own car to maximize your stay. Be sure to check some of these important driving rules.   

Important Reminders:

  • Drive on the left side of the road.
  • The minimum driving age is 18 years old and the minimum rental age is 23 years old. 
  • While driving, a driver and all passengers in the car must wear seat belts.
  • Hands-free is a must. Keep your phone away.
  • The speed limit is 60 km/h in urban areas, 80-120 km/h in rural roads, and 120 km/h in highways.   
  • Drink moderately. The legal alcohol limit is 50 mg per 100 ml of blood.
  • Third-party insurance and at least 1 spare tire is a must.
  • 4×4 vehicles are recommended in this place and authoritative map is a must.
  • Avoid driving at night as you might encounter wildlife animals and be sure to have an early warning device, fire extinguisher, first aid kit and reflective vest in your car.
  • Fines can be paid at the local police station and the police phone number is 1011.
  • In Namibia, road traffic signs are in English. While, in and out of Windhoek, there are roadblocks. Drivers must show their driver licenses when crossing roadblocks so they should carry their driving licenses at all times while driving.
  • It is recommended to drive with the dipped headlights even during the day as roads can be dusty. Whilst driving, it is recommended to keep a firm grip with both hands on the steering wheel since it is easy to lose the car control on gravel roads.
  • When driving a long distance, it is recommended to have drinking water and a jerry can with fuel. and many petrol stations take cash only.
  • To rent a car, a driver must be 23 years of age and has held a valid driver license for one year or more. Some rental car companies require drivers to be 25 years of age and charge an additional insurance fee from drivers whose age is between 21-25 years.
  • It is recommended to rent 4×4 vehicles when travelling through remote areas. Tolls are charged for each section of the motorway and are depending on the distance travelled. It is recommended to always have some change when driving.
  • The red and white markings on the road mean “no parking zone” and parking there is not permitted. The yellow and white markings denote short-term parking spaces. Diagonal white lines indicate motorcycles parking space only.

Driving in the Namibia During Rainy Season:

Avoid travelling during the rainy season from May to October as it may be impossible to use some roads since flooding. It is recommended to avoid crossing flowing water because it may be deeper than looks.Keep your emergency kits handy at all times. Plan your trip accordingly.
