Why carry an IDP while driving in Oman?
Your IDP is a valid form of identification in more than 150 countries worldwide and contains your name, photo and driver information in the 12 most widely spoken languages in the world – it is understandable to most of the local officials and authorities of the countries you visit.
It translates your identification information into 12 languages — so it speaks the language even if you don’t. Oman highly recommends an International Driving Permit.
Driving Rules in Oman
To drive in Oman, foreign visitors need a valid driver license issued by the country of their residence and an International driving license. Visit Oman and explore its desert region with wildlife and magnificent golden sand on the southeastern coast. Drive around different places with your own car is the best way to explore this country. Read the traffic rules to prepare for your trip.
Important Reminders:
- Traffic moves on the right side of the road.
- The minimum driving age is 18 years old and the minimum rental age is 21 years old.
- While driving, a driver and all passengers in the car must wear seat belts.
- Child-restraint is a must.
- Hands-free is a must. Keep your phones away unless they are hands-free.
- Drinking is not allowed.
- The speed limit is 40 km/h in urban areas, 90 km in rural roads and 120 km/h on highways.
- You are prohibited to park your vehicle before public buildings such as palaces, gas stations, etc.
- Never ever run a red light. You will have to spend a night in jail. When the light starts flashing green, prepare to stop. (I’m not kidding).
- Always follow the speed limit. If you don’t know what the speed limit is, follow the speed of traffic. (There are traffic cameras everywhere).
- No road rage allowed. No flipping the bird, no hand gestures, no yelling, etc. (The police will get involved and you will go to jail and be deported. Once again, I’m not kidding.)
- Always be prepared for anyone to pul infront of you.
- Practice defensive driving.
- Do not pull all the way up to stop at a red light. This is considered running a red light. You’ll notice that the locals stop a good distance back; follow their lead.
Driving in Oman during Winter:
Driving in winter can be challenging. Snow chains are required from December to February. Keep your emergency kits handy at all times. As long as you’re prepared, you’re good to go.
Enjoy your stay and have a safe travel.
