Why carry an IDP while driving in Portugal?
Your IDP is a valid form of identification in more than 150 countries worldwide and contains your name, photo and driver information in the 12 most widely spoken languages in the world – it is understandable to most of the local officials and authorities of the countries you visit.
It translates your identification information into 12 languages — so it speaks the language even if you don’t. Portugal highly recommends an International Driving Permit.
Driving Rules in Portugal
Ordinary Portuguese don’t seek to violate the traffic rules every minute. However, they are also behind in care, which put the country in first place in Europe in the number of road accidents. Driving style of the inhabitants can rather be called eccentric, if not aggressive. During the holidays, many get behind the wheel under the influence, after drinking a bottle (or even two) of Portuguese wine. Of course, the Portuguese police know all these local features and ruthlessly suppress various violations themselves or with the help of video recording of disgraces on the roads. However, the number of accidents doesn’t decrease. Therefore, it’s not worth saving on insurance when renting a car. Take the full one – it will pay off. Read the traffic rules to prepare for your trip.
Important Reminders:
- Traffic moves on the right side of the road.
- The minimum driving age is 18 years old.
- While driving, a driver and all passengers in the car must wear seat belts.
- Overtaking is on the left hand side of the road.
- Drivers must yield to disembarking tram passengers.
- On the stop fines can be issued by the traffic police and must be paid in Euros. Most traffic police vehicles are fitted with portable ATM machines.
- Drivers are to carry at all times while driving photo identification when driving in the capital, Lisbon, or any other city in Portugal
- Dipped headlights must be used in tunnels and when there is poor daytime visibility.
- Petrol stations in Portugal are open from 7am to 10pm with some stations in major cities and on the highway open 24 hours.
- It is illegal to talk on the phone while driving.
Driving in Portugal During Winter and Rainy Season
Driving in Portugal during winter is tolerable. You are most likely to experience hot weather than snows and rains. Just be sure to have emergency kits in your vehicle and you will be fine.
Portugal isn’t sunny all of the time. In fact, large parts of the country are actually wet for a lot of the year. Despite this, Portugal just isn’t designed for the rain. You’ll see this on the pavements in Portugal, which get incredibly slippery when they’re wet. You’ll also notice that there’s not a lot to do in Portugal when it rains. There are also a lot more accidents on the roads when it rains. Whether this is that the roads don’t cope well with the rain or that the Portuguese themselves aren’t great at driving in the rain is up for debate. Safe travels!
