Why carry an IDP while driving in Romania?
Your IDP is a valid form of identification in more than 150 countries worldwide and contains your name, photo and driver information in the 12 most widely spoken languages in the world – it is understandable to most of the local officials and authorities of the countries you visit.

Driving Rules in Romania
Romanian laws permit foreign visitors to drive private motor vehicles with the International Driving Permit accompanied by a valid driver license from their home country. It is permitted to drive with the International Driving Permit for 90 day after arriving to Romania. Read the traffic rules to prepare for your trip.
Important Reminders:
- You may not use a mobile phone while driving unless you use a hands-free set. Failure to comply can result in a fine.
- The minimum driving age is 18 years old.
- While driving, a driver and all passengers in the car must wear seat belts.
- Children from 3 to 12 years of age must not occupy the place on the driver’s right.
- The use of low beam is compulsory during the daytime too, on highways, express roads and national – European roads(E).
- The Romanian police force has the right to pick up a car or find a driver for parking a car in unallowed places.
- , In case of an accident or serious damages on the public highway, flag its presence with lights and emergency warning triangle. If the accident has resulted in casualties, call the emergency number 112 and wait for the police at the scene without moving the vehicle or deleting tracks..
- Foreign drivers who wish to drive in Romania can drive on public roads for 90 days, after which it would be necessary for them to get an international driving license.
- Public roads are prohibited for vehicles technically inadequate and which do not have an RCA insurance policy.
- Children under 12 years of age cannot be ridden in the front seat.
Driving in Romania During Winter Season:
For driving in bad winter weather, it is required winter tires or snow chains. The speed limit is 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90km/h – on open roads, 100km/h on dual carriageways, 130km/h – on motorways. The legal drink driving limit is zero; a driver must be having no alcohol in his blood when driving.
