Why carry an IDP while driving in Mexico?
Your IDP is a valid form of identification in more than 150 countries worldwide and contains your name, photo and driver information in the 12 most widely spoken languages in the world – it is understandable to most of the local officials and authorities of the countries you visit.
It translates your identification information into 12 languages — so it speaks the language even if you don’t. Mexico highly recommends an International Driving Permit.
Driving Rules in Mexico
Driving in Mexico can be a very comfortable way to explore the country, visiting freely the beauty of its landscape. It has an extensive road network covering all areas in the country and, most of them, in good conditions so you’ll find driving in Mexico pretty easy and straightforward.
Here are some important reminders in driving in Mexico:
- Traffic moves on the right side of the road and overtaking is on the left side.
- The minimum driving age is 15 years old.
- While driving, a driver and all passengers in the car must wear seat belts.
- It is not permitted to turn right on red, unless there is an additional sign or signal.
- At all times while driving, a foreign driver must have a valid driving permit and, if it is required, an International driver license; passport; car registration papers; auto insurance; proof of car ownership or renting.
- Mexican insurance is required for all vehicles.
- Driving under the influence of alcohol is illegal and legal blood-alcohol level is 0.08%.
- Using cell phones is prohibited while driving in many parts of Mexico.
- It is required that only owners drive their vehicles, or that the owner be in the vehicle.
- The maximum speed limit is: in the city – 40 km/h; outside the city – 80 km/h; on highways – from 100 to 110km/h.
Additional information:
In remote areas, there may be a lot of people walking on the highway. In a case of incident, you are guilty until proven innocent, especially, if you don’t have Mexican auto insurance. The police may impound your vehicle, especially if you don’t have insurance adjuster or an attorney who can defend your rights. Avoid driving at night. Always keep car doors locked and windows up while driving.
Driving in Mexico during Winters:
It is uncommon to see snow in Mexico unless you are planning to visit areas located at altitudes greater than 10,000 feet above sea level. There are two main seasons in Mexico, rainy and dry. Rainy season lasts from May or June through October or November. Dry season last from December to April.
Enjoy your stay and have a safe travel.
